Review Summary:

No scent throw from this lovely tart.

I absolutely love Red Velvet Cake, so when I saw this offering from Yankee Candle Company, it was a no-brainer for me to try it out. The wax melt itself is a deep red color, reminiscent of the gloriously sinful cake. There is a picture of a gorgeous four-layer buttercream frosted red velvet cake on the label with a huge slice out of it. (Looking for the slice? Try my plate!)

I was a bit disappointed with my cold sniff. All I smelled was…wax. How could it be? But I knew that I would be in for so much more once this one started melting. I had no worries!

A most decadent creation of creamy frosting atop moist cake and a touch of brown sugar. So very sweet!

Perhaps I should have worried. I left this wax melt in my 24W electric melter and returned after 30 minutes to a fully melted wax melt and…no scent throw. I mean – none! This was in a medium sized room, but I thought I should get some throw out of it. I did smell it once I put my nose right up to the warmer dish – I smelled some chocolatey goodness and hints of buttercream frosting. The scent (what I could smell) was wonderful! Very realistic and delicious. But who can stand with their nose hovering over a wax dish all day to savor a scent? I sure can’t. yankee-candle-red-velvet-wax-melt

I was very disappointed with the scent throw on this wax melt. Seriously, if I could give this a 1/2 star rating, I would. I have the same scent in a tumbler candle and I’m looking forward to better results. I did read some excellent reviews for the candle, so I’ll continue to hold out hope.

Do you enjoy the tarts from Yankee Candle Company? Which ones are your favorites?

Happy candle burning ~

  1. Thanks for the review Andrea 🙂 Target recently opened here in Canada, and they carry this particular melt. Now I’ll know to stay away! I certainly hope not all their melts are like this.

  3. I am not a big fan of Red Velvet Cake. However, I am a huge Yankee Candle Fan!! Lately though, I have noticed the scent throw on several melts that should have been STRONG were mediocre at best. Sorry this melt was a disappointment for you. Hopefully it was a dud, maybe?

    • Maybe you’ll have better luck, Amy. Mine might have been a dud. I have Cherry Lemonade and Black Coconut here to melt. Now I’m excited to try those!

  5. I can’t picture how Red Velvet Cake would smell because a real red velvet cake smells vaguely of chocolate and nothing more. However, I do love Yankee candles. I love their Holiday Bayberry every year, also Balsam and Cedar. I hate when the company discontinues certain scents that I love- like Mediterranean Cypress and Lakeside Birch.
