If you’ve followed our blog for any length of time, you’ve noticed our product reviews and our star rating system. We rate products anywhere from 1 star to 5 stars, with plenty of options in between. But what exactly do we mean by these star ratings and how do we come about doling them out?
We tossed about a number of ideas when we decided to provide star ratings. Considering most of the products we review are candles and wax melts, we thought about rating certain aspects separately: scent, strength, longevity, packaging, etc. But we realized that all of those aspects are incredibly subjective, just like an overall rating would be. We finally decided to provide one overall rating for each product, encompassing many factors. We wanted to keep things fairly simple and straightforward. After all, these are only our opinions and our experiences. We have different preferences, different home environments, different expectations and so forth.
When we do rate a product, we consider all aspects. Customer service, packaging/presentation, product claims, scent, scent throw (both cold and hot), and product performance. With that in mind, here’s what each rating generally means:
These are products that fell way below expectations or performed poorly. If a purchased product does not live up to its claim, it may also find itself slapped with a 1 Star rating. An extreme example would be a candle that claimed to burn for 50 hours but only lasted for 20. We do not rate scented products as a 1 star simply based on scent preference.
These are products that have some redeeming qualities but the overall negative outweighed the positive. These are products that we wouldn’t bother purchasing again. We are not taking scent preference into account at this stage.
We consider these middle-of-the-road products. We could take them or leave them. Here’s where we really start taking scent preference into account. We would most likely be willing to give these products another try and/or purchase them again if they were on sale.
These products lived up to expectations and more. We’re starting to get to the cream of the crop here. Scent preference is a factor.
We consider these the best of the best. We don’t dish out many 5-star ratings and hold this honor for our very favorites.
We also have 1/2 star ratings in between.
As mentioned, these are only our own personal opinions. We differ widely amongst ourselves and we expect you would, too. We hope you use our ratings as a guide to help you discover new products, companies, and/or scents. And if you happen to disagree? Fantastic! Come back and let us know…we’re always looking for other opinions! 🙂
Happy candle burning ~
