I have a problem. Well, I have many problems, but the one at hand is this – I love ScentSationals wax melts. Love them! You can’t beat the performance for the price and there is an incredible variety. So what’s the problem? I loathe shopping my local WalMart, where I can find these lovelies. It’s crowded, it’s loud, and I most often see a limited picked over variety in the candle display section. What’s a scent addicted gal to do? Why shop online, of course!
And shop online I do. The price point is slightly higher on the website, but there are often incredible sales to make up for the difference. Combine that with a free shipping offer and I’m set. So imagine my surprise one day when I got a huge shipment in (don’t judge me) and several of my wax clamshells seemed smaller. Not run of the mill actual-size-might-vary smaller, but this-can’t-be-the-same-product smaller.
The nerdy-nerd in me decided to pull out my handy dandy wax scale and take a few scientific measurements. Sure enough, there was quite a difference. Whereas the clamshells I was accustomed to ranged in weight from 2.6-2.8 ounces, some of these “new” clamshells weighed in at a puny 2.1-2.4 ounces. I didn’t need my scientific calculator to know I had been had.
Were the wax melts were going to be phasing in at the smaller size but at the same price? I’m really OK with that. I understand this is a business and the cost of everything seems to be going up these days. I get it…really, I do. But I like being an informed consumer. Just tell me the truth. I can handle it. I may weep little…grumble a lot…write blog posts about it…but my heart will still be with you, ScentSationals. I’ll still order and I’ll still drool over the scents, begging for more. See…isn’t that true love?
I decided to contact customer service just to see what was up. What would they say? I don’t want to copy/paste the exact email as I do not have their permission to do so, but here’s the skinny: The smaller sized clamshells are the ones that they supply to H-E-B chain stores. When they have excess of that product, those go on the ScentSationals website for sale. They said they try to avoid this as much as possible, but it does happen. They also stated that there would not be a way to indicate on the website which ones might be from H-E-B stock since the inventory is fluid. Their suggestion? To call customer service before placing an order to inquire specifically at the time. That’s the only way to tell if you’d be getting the smaller size or not. (Customer Service: 877-313-1045)
Bottom line for me? I will still shop online, but I’ll be compelled to call customer service before ordering. I don’t consider myself frugal by any means, but I do love a good bargain. A quick telephone call seems like a small price to pay to make sure I get my money’s worth.
Have you had a similar experience with ScentSationals? What are your thoughts?
