Growing up in the South you find that sweet potato pie is a staple around these parts…especially at Thanksgiving time. That’s why I was thrilled to see that Yankee Candle had a version of this delectable dessert as a part of their 2013 Thanksgiving Collection. Yankee Candle and pie? How could I go wrong?
From this collection, I have already reviewed Turkey & Stuffing and Cranberry Sauce on Candle Scoop. Or you can check out my review of all three on Candlefind.com…the site for candle lovers.
I purchased the large, 22 ounce apothecary styled jar during a recent sale. It has a picture of a large sweet potato on the label, covered in sticky marshmallows and brown sugar sprinklings. It was enough to make me want to bake a pie! Although the picture below looks more red, the wax was colored a deep orange-y brown. The cold sniff urged me on…it was thick and rich, heavy on the spices. I smelled sharp cinnamon and sweet nutmeg and creamy sweet potatoes. Yum-my!
A crave-worthy delight . . . yummy mashed sweet potato filling baked with nutmeg and vanilla.
I started this candle in a medium-sized room and left it for a couple of hours. I knew the wax melt pool would take a while to fully form, so I practiced restraint and left it to do its thing for a while. When I returned, I opened the door and I immediately fell in love. This candle scent was delicious! Oh my! I smelled rich, creamy sweet potatoes and just the right hints of vanilla. The spices blended in nicely without overwhelming the entire scent. I couldn’t smell any pie crust (bummer), but this smelled just like the filling of a calorie-laden sweet potato pie. I loved it!
The burn was fantastic – a very slow and even burn with minimal wax left on the sides of the jar. The flame could get a little high for my taste, but it did well with an Illuma-Lid in place. The scent throw on this candle was strong! I have had so many disappointments with YC jars lately, that it was nice to have such a good scent throw on this one.
I would definitely repurchase this one and wish I had stocked up on it this season. Hopefully they will bring this one back next year.
And for the record, I did end up baking that pie. Yum, yum!
Happy candle burning and Happy Thanksgiving, y’all!
