Review Summary:

A sweet, buttery caramel vanilla scent with hints of rum. The scent throw is mild.

Hot Buttered Rum is one of the candles from the It Happened One Night Collection at Bath & Body Works. I am in love with the beautiful candle jars and the entire festive vibe of the collection. I had huge success with Cranberry Pear Bellini, so I was excited to get down to business with Hot Buttered Rum.

This beautiful candle jar had a sprinkling of confetti (gold, silver, and burgundyndy) with a golden-yellow ribbon in the center and a black gift tag label with the scent name in all caps. The lid was gold and textured – very pretty! The wax itself was golden-yellow in this 3-wick candle jar. For presentation, this candle received an A+ from me!

The cold sniff on this candle was a little softer than I would have liked. It was delicious, though! A creamy, buttery scent with hints of some dark rum. I lit this candle in my powder room and left it for about 45 minutes before I returned to check on it. One thing I did notice was that the scent was not greeting me past the door. That was my indicator that this scent throw was lighter than some of the other B&BW candles I have tried. Once I opened the door, I loved what I smelled – a sweet, heavy caramel scent that with creamy vanilla mixed in. Those rum notes were still present but intermittent – I caught whiffs of a dark rum scent every now and then. It was soooo incredibly good! But it was also fairly mild. It barely filled my powder room with scent, which was a disappointment.

An indulgent blend of buttered rum, vanilla and a hint of smooth caramel that’s perfect for your winter party

The candle burn was good – nice even flames and a deep wax melt pool with no tunneling or wasted wax. The scent throw and composition were consistent throughout the life of the candle. I had no issues in that department. This was a fast burning candle, as many of the latest Bath & Body Work candles seem to be.

Overall, this candle was just OK to me. The scent throw just wasn’t enough to meet my needs. I can find a similar scent elsewhere with a stronger scent throw, so I would not repurchase this particular candle from B&BW.

Have you tried Hot Buttered Rum? What are your thoughts?

Happy candle burning ~

  1. I haven’t tried this scent. It does sounds yummy from the description. The Cranberry Pear Bellini was a good one! Sorry it didn’t pack that scent throw punch we all love from B&BW.

    • Thanks, Bonnie. I know some prefer the less intense throws, so this might be right up someone’s alley.

  3. I was looking through reviews of this candle in hopes that I just did not get a dud :/ Thanks for informing that it is, in fact, on the lighter side. Which is a bit disappointing because I was so excited to just love it! Thanks again!

  4. You said that you can find a similar scent elsewhere but with a stronger throw. Where can I find a similar scent. I am in love with the smell of this candle but it only really fills up my bathroom. Please let me know. I’d love to have this scent around my house for the holidays.
