Rating Breakdown:

  • Packaging/Presentation: This was a tumbler style jar that reminded me of those from Bath & Body Works. The label on front with a green banner (top-left) that indicated the company name. Below that, the words ‘apple peel’ were written in a green, script font in larger letters. Directly below that were the words ‘& PEAR.’ That was written in all caps and in a grey font. On the right hand side of the label, I could see a few pears on a pear tree. The candle had a shiny silver lid. The wax was a mottled green color and there were 3 well-placed wicks. 3.5/5
  • Scent: The cold sniff smelled mostly of fresh, sweet apples. I didn’t pick any pear notes up on cold whiff. Once burning, I found this apple to be a bit more on the tart side than sweet. I still could not pick up any pear notes, but that was OK. It was a nice smelling apple scented candle to me. 3.5/5
  • Scent Throw: The scent was noticeable in the room I had it in. It stayed fairly contained – no seeping of scent past the door. In the room, I could tell it was burning but it was more muted than I would have liked. It would have worked better in a smaller space. 3/5
  • Performance: I didn’t have any problems with wicks or uneven burning. I obtained a full wax melt pool and I had manageable wicks with relatively low flames. (No drowning wicks, though). The wax melt pool was even and fairly deep. I had no wasted wax in my jar. I did not notice any black sooting. 4/5

  1. I salute your search for great-smelling, inexpensive wax. I’ve never really thought of Wal-Mart when it comes to candles, but when I burn through my collection I think I’ll give it a try. I’ve also discovered a brand called Ashland that sells at Michaels, and they’ve got great fall scents for far less than Yankee or B&BW. I’m especially excited for the Maple Bacon candle they have – more as a novelty than a home fragrance, though.

    • Interesting scent, Gil. I love to try scents just for the novelty aspect, especially without too much investment. I am seeing more and more candle products at discount stores that make curbing this wax addiction all the more difficult!
