Candle Festival in Ubon Ratchathani, Isan, Thailand

For years I have been fascinated with images of the Candle Procession in Ubon Ratchathani, Isan, Thailand. The annual July festival in Ubon Ratchathani is the largest of many throughout Thailand that mark the beginning of the rainy season and the Buddhist Lent.  Offerings of candles and supplies are given to the Buddhist monks to help weather their three month long retreat. The festival incorporates traditional music, dance, and a procession of huge wax (candle) sculptures.

What an adventure it would be to visit Thailand and see these magnificent creations in person. Check out this photo diary of one traveler’s experience at this year’s event in Ubon Ratchathani, Isan, Thailand.

Happy candle burning ~
