Brand Wars: Spring (B&BW) vs. The Smell of Spring (Aromatique)

Time for Brand Wars! In this series, we’ll be comparing and contrasting similar scents across various brands. We will not only look at the scents themselves, but costs, value, and performance – among other things.

Spring-vs-Smell-Spring

This week’s contestants:

  • Spring from Bath & Body Works ~ Invoking a delicate blend of light rain, yellow daisies and sycamore woods, this calming fragrance captures the essence of regrowth and new life in spring
  • The Smell of Spring from Aromatique ~ The Fragrance of Fresh Hyacinth Blossoms!

Reason for Comparison: They both contain the word spring. Yes, I admit to being lazy. In addition, I wanted to compare a White Barn/B&BW candle with a more luxury brand.

The Showdown

Round 1: Upfront Cost

Even though the B&BW candle isn’t available anymore, I did use current pricing for these calculations. This particular candle was 14.5 ounces, selling regularly for $22.50. (Sale price is 2 for $24, or $12 each). That amounts to $1.55 per ounce retail, but it does come down to 83¢ per ounce if on sale.

The candle from Aromatique was 12 ounces, selling regularly for $21. That amounts to $1.75 per ounce.

Winner: Bath & Body Works . Even with the B&BW price increases, you will be paying less per ounce of wax when compared to the Aromatique candle.

Round 2: Value

The B&BW candle has a stated burn time of 25-45 hours. Keeping with the regular price of $22.50, that amounts to 50-90¢ per hour. (With the 2 for $24 sale, the numbers amount to 27-48¢/hour.)

The Aromatique candle has a stated burn time of 50-60 hours. That amounts to 35-42¢ per hour.

Winner: Aromatique. Unless you’re purchasing the B&BW candle on sale, you’ll generally be paying less per hour burned with the Aromatique candle, making it a better value overall.

Round 3: Scent

This round is based more on personal preference. The B&BW candle was more of a floral mix and slightly sweet – like appley sweet. I didn’t get as much greenery as I did from the Aromatique candle. The candle from Aromatique was all floral with a bit of greenery mixed in. Unmistakably floral. If you’re looking for a straight up floral – in particular, hyacinths – then the Aromatique candle is the one to grab. If you’re looking for a more floral mix with some fruity sweetness, look to the B&BW candle.

Winner: Aromatique. Though I really enjoyed both scents, my favorite of the two had to be Aromatique.

Round 4: Strength

B&BW’s candle was strong, and I could smell it in the room it was in and beyond. The Aromatique candle was smaller and had only one wick (vs. 3 for B&BW). Still, the Aromatique candle pushed out more scent for me. I could smell it well beyond the room it was in. The Aromatique candle seemed more intense and traveled further throughout my home.

Winner: Aromatique.

Round 5: Performance

Both candles performed well. No sooting problems, no wasted wax. It took more “work” to get a full wax melt pool with the Aromatique candle…actually, it was just such a slow burn that it took a long first-time burn to get the full wax melt pool. Also, I really had to keep up with my B&BW wicks. If I did not, they did become mini-torches. The Aromatique candle was much less maintenance.

Winner: Aromatique

Overall Winner: The Smell of Spring, Aromatique

  1. Both of these sound great to me, but a well-done hyacinth is always superlative.

  2. I would select the Bath and Body Works/ Whit Barn candle just because they are my favorite candles in the world! It’s too bad they no longer make this one, I would have loved to try it!
