Candle sales during the holiday season make for approximately 35% of the total annual sales according to the National Candle Association. That’s a lot of candle buying! If you have a candle lover on your Nice List, perhaps you want to splurge just a bit and get them something they may not buy for themselves. Here we offer up an (almost) A to Z guide to some very luxurious candles that just might fit the bill.
Up first? A through M…
A – Archipelago Botanicals
Candles from Archipelago Botanicals make a good gift all year long, but you can find a slew of great options for the holidays. These natural soy candles pack a punch and come in beautiful jars and candle tins perfect for gift giving. Consider Havana (a blend of Bergamot, Tobacco Leaf and Ylang Ylang) or Winter Frost (A limited edition for the holidays, Winter Frost features a fresh blend of White Birch and Wintergreens).
B – Bluewick
Life smells good…yes, indeed. Bluewick offers a wide variety of scents in sleek, chic containers that would make any gift recipient swoon. To brighten up the season, check out Grapefruit Lime (Notes of Grapefruit, Lime and Pineapple) or Yuzu Lychee (Notes of Yuzu, Grapefruit and Lychee)
C – Capri Blue
You’ll find beautiful fragrances in gift-ready containers with Capri Blue Candles. Been shopping at an Aeropostale store? Chances are you smelled Volcano, one of Capri Blue’s most popular fragrances. You probably can’t go wrong choosing Volcano (tropical fruits and sugared citrus) or Aloha Orchid (orchids, jasmine and gardenia).
D – Diptyque
Really want to impress someone with a quality candle? Diptyque is sure to fit the bill – beautiful, unique, and made to last. Try the popular Baies scent (a bouquet of roses and blackcurrant leaves), Feu de Bois (the warm, familiar, sophisticated accord of rare woods throughout the long winter days), or Pomander (a delicious orange studded with cloves and cinnamon, the spicy scent of winter).
E – Esteban Paris
The candles from Esteban Paris are the gifts that keep on giving, with their tassel-topped lids and vibrant colors. Seek out Ambre (subtle ambery scent with a citrus accent and vanilla woody hints) or the sexy Santal (soft-wood perfume).
F – Fornasetti
If you have someone that is truly ready to stimulate the olfactory and visual senses, look no further than Fornasetti. These artistic Italian-crafted ceramic containers are sure to delight. Think Flora (an elegant white floral bouquet inspired by the flowers that flourish in the Fornasetti family garden in Milan) or Otto (Mediterranean herbs and wood).
G – Gilles Dewavrin
In sleek silver aluminum containers, Gilles Dewavrin candles are for the most discriminating of noses. How about Caviar Bleu (An indigo blue couch on a painted white wood floor, open bow-windows overlooking the ocean! A sea-inspired, energizing fragrance) or The Noir (Essential! This slightly smoky tea is paired with crisp lime to instantly bring an elegant mood into the home)?
H – Henri Bendel
The scent master Harry Slatkin is behind the wonderfully scented Henri Bendel brand of candles. You can’t go wrong with any of these delicacies, but we’re particularly fond of Fig (Fig combines the scent of the sun-ripened fruit with that of its woody leaves with a hint of sweet jasmine, spicy anise and sensual sandalwood) and Lemon Verbena (Very fragrant, citrusy lemon with fruity notes of papaya and bergamot and green woody notes of cedarwood and vetiver).
I – Illume
The problem with shopping at Illume Candles is that there are so many wonderful choices! A variety of containers and a wide range of scents are available. Be sure to consider Oakmoss (Tuscan cypress and oakmoss are infused with wild geranium, Japanese yuzu and Mandarin orange) or Heirloom Pumpkin (Dark brown sugar and cinnamon spice are deliciously blended with creamy pumpkin puree and gilded with notes of cassia root and warm vanilla sugar).
J – Jonathan Adler
Jonathan Adler candles are just plain fun – there’s no way around it. The POP candles are colorful, highly scented, and come in gorgeous reusable containers. Depending on the giftee, choose Bubble Gum (Sugary scents of pink bubble gum in a bold reusable pop vessel. A sweet gift for any occasion) or Sea Salt (Evoke lazy summer days at the shore with a fresh mix of beachside scents, including island lime, ocean breeze, sea salt, blue lotus, water hyacinth, outdoor freshness and white musk in a crisp navy glass vessel).
K – Karen Klein
Wrapped in authentic Italian paper, Karen Klein candles are already perfect for gift giving. Look for Sicilian Lemongrass (Blooming high on the Sicilian hills, abundant in sweet citrus, redolent of a vibrant and happy life, this dynamic and stylish scent evokes the Italian Springtime) or Bellini (Sparkling, crisp champagne sweetened with rich peach puree…this delightful cocktail first appeared in Harry’s Bar, Venice, in 1948).
L – LAFCO
Want a huge candle to gift your candle lover? Go LAFCO, all the way. LAFCO stands for Luxury Articles & Fragrances Company – totally understandable when you hold and smell one of these beauties. Try Sage & Walnut (Deep, earthy and warm; a blend of walnut, green sage and chestnuts) or Cortland Apple (Crisp and fresh; a true apple scent with a touch of green).
M – (Malin + Goetz)
Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz know scents. And with that knowledge, they have created some of the most highly scented and “guy friendly” candles around. (Malin + Goetz) candles are sure to please, so don’t shy away from Cannabis (Top notes of fresh lemon and orange, middle notes of fig and pepper, with a sophisticated base of oakmoss, sandalwood and amber-patchouli) or Dark Rum (Top notes of bergamot and plum; middle notes of rum and leather; base notes of amber-patchouli, and vanilla).
Stay tuned tomorrow for the remainder of your holiday gifting guide to luxurious candles.
